Alanis Morissette Takes Acoustic Tour to Chicago’s
By Randy J. Klodz
It’s hard to believe that 1995’s smash debut “Jagged Little Pill” by
Alanis Morissette has already amazed fans for a decade, but Morissette decided
to celebrate the anniversary of one of the top-selling albums of the 90s by
taking her tour on the road, and reliving the album in the form of “Jagged
Little Pill Acoustic,” which is due to hit stores July 26. On this tour, Morissette
plays the entire CD in an acoustic, intimate fashion. Her tour stormed through
Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre on June 11.
With nothing but a nightstand, lamp, and throw rug onstage, Alanis Morissette,
now sporting mid-length hair with blonde streaks, began her set alone with
an a cappella rendition of “Your House,” the hidden track from the original
“Jagged Little Pill” album.
Upon completion of “Your House,” the packed Auditorium Theatre cheered
loudly, as the curtain behind her rose and unveiled her 5-piece band—and
living room stage setting—that busted into an acoustic version of the
popular track “You Learn,” with the fans singing along.
As custom with any of her performances, Morissette often spoke to the
crowd in a way an artist would explain his or her painting to a group of onlookers,
in a way that engages a live audience and keeps each member begging for more.
Morissette told the Auditorium Theatre crowd that she was apprehensive about
dedicating a tour to reissued music in that she’s often one to go forward
instead of backward, but perhaps she missed touring as a sole headliner. Morissette’s
last Chicago area appearance came last year on July 21 at Tinley Park’s Tweeter
Center in support of fellow Canadian band Barenaked Ladies. Or maybe she just
really likes Chicago. “There are two kinds of people I hang out with when
I’m in L.A.,” Morissette told the crowd upon the completion of song ‘Not the
Doctor,’ “Canadians and people from Chicago.”
Only when Morissette fired up her smash-hit “Ironic” did she begin to
do her usual pace from stage left to stage right and back again, with each
member of the crowd singing each of the song’s choruses in sync with Morissette.
Along with all 12—well 13 tracks including the hidden track—songs
from “Jagged Little Pill,” Morissette sprinkled in acoustic versions of some
of her other hit songs including “A Man” and “Hands Clean” from her “Under
Rug Swept” album; “Uninvited” from the “City of Angels” movie soundtrack;
and “Thank U,” the set’s closer from “Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie.”
After 90 minutes and two encores, Morissette fans were ready for more.
But they will have to wait until she comes through town again, though no current
tour plans have been announced.
Young singer/songwriter Jason Mraz warmed the stage for Morissette. Mraz
is currently on tour in support of his new album “Mr. A-Z” which is also scheduled
to hit stores on July 26. Most music fans know Mraz for his hit pop songs
“You and I Both” and “Remedy (I Won’t Worry).”
Morissette’s current tour runs through July 17 where she’s scheduled
to invade Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa, Calif. For more
