Avenged Sevenfold to Visit Chicago Twofold

By Randy J. Klodz

Southern California-based hard-rock quintet Avenged Sevenfold will be making two Chicago-area stops within the next four months, with the nearest date, an April 4 show at the Bottom Lounge with My Chemical Romance as support, feeding the thirst of the band’s increasingly dedicated fan base.

The “dark” image of Avenged Sevenfold—which includes M. Shadows on vocals, Zacky Vengeance and Synyster Gates on guitars, Johnny Christ on bass and The Reverend on drums—has helped draw comparisons to popular rock-punk vets AFI, but the similarities stop there. Avenged Sevenfold’s sound is quite heavy, with songs from “Waking the Fallen,” the band’s latest release, such as “Eternal Rest” and “Radiant Eclipse” that sound more like something off of a Hatebreed or Coal Chamber album, rather than a track from an AFI project.

Sure the band’s name my have a religion-inspired origin, and sure, the drummer’s moniker is “The Reverend,” but the band feels that some people look too much into the Catholic-school upbringing each of the band’s members once lived. “We’re not a religious band by any means--though we aren’t sacrilegious,” said Zacky Vengeance, one-half of Avenged Sevenfold’s guitar sector. “Maybe it has affected us as people, but as for as the band goes…Everybody is brought up somehow, but you get to a certain age you make up your own mind and make your own decisions. There are reasons why we were all getting kicked out of our schools and stuff like that. We have minds of our own.”

Clocking in at more than an hour’s worth of fury, “Waking the Fallen,” which was released last August, should offer more to the style of Pantera, Megadeth and Iron Maiden than most of the punk-rock acts typical to the Vans Warped Tour. Avenged Sevenfold will also be taking part in this year’s Vans Warped Tour festivities which is scheduled to take place July 24 at the Tweeter Center in Tinley Park, a tour in which the band played select dates on last year.

The Bottom Lounge is at 3206 N. Wilton Ave. Tickets for this all-ages show are listed for $12 each. Show time is scheduled for 5 p.m., with My Chemical Romance scheduled to open the show. For more information on Avenged Sevenfold log on to www.avengedsevenfold.com.
