Fiona Apple to Sweeten Riviera Theatre with Her ‘Extraordinary Machine’

By Randy J. Klodz

New York City-native singer/songwriter Fiona Apple has stunningly amazed sold-out crowds worldwide with her powerful singing voice and talented piano playing. Though Fiona Apple has drawn her share of controversy over the years--then again who hasn’t--she remains a must-see touring act. Apple’s first full nationwide tour in years brings her to Chicago’s Riviera Theatre on Dec. 4 in support of her new album “Extraordinary Machine.”

Fiona Apple came out of nowhere with her 1996 album “Tidal” which went on to sell over three million copies behind popular songs such as “Never is a Promise,” “Shadowboxer” and “Sleep to Dream.” The album’s biggest hit, “Criminal,” caught fire following the release of the song’s erotic music video.

Apple released the album, with its long album title shortened to “When the Pawn,” in 1999. Her second effort was well received by fans worldwide and the singles “Fast as You Can,” “Limp” and “Paper Bag” kept “When the Pawn” on play lists for years.

The October release of “Extraordinary Machine” follows nearly a six year void of releases. Apple’s “Extraordinary Machine,” her third full-length album, reached as high as No. 7 on the charts upon its introduction to the world, further supporting her solid fan base. The singles “O’Sailor” and “Parting Gift” are radio favorites and have helped push the album.

Riviera Theatre is at 4746 N. Broadway in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood. Tickets for this all-ages show are listed for $39 each with showtime scheduled for 7 p.m. For more info on Fiona Apple log on to
