Nine Inch Nails Storms Through Chicago
By Randy J. Klodz
Trent Reznor leads the way for industrial rockers Nine Inch Nails on
tour in support of “With Teeth,” the band’s first release in six years. The
current tour in support of “With Teeth,” which hit stores May 3, stormed through
Chicago’s intimate Congress Theater on May 6 and May 7.
Even a 30-minute technical delay following the May 6 set opener “The
Wretched” couldn’t derail the Nine Inch Nails touring force. Nine Inch Nails’
multi-talented frontman Trent Reznor began “The Wretched” on piano during
the song’s introduction as a single stage light shone upon him.
As the rest of his bandmates took the stage—which included Alessandro
Cortini and Ralph Dieter (guitars), Jeordie White (bass), and Jerome Dillon
(drums)—Reznor clutched his mic stand mightily, as his long-sleeve white
dress shirt clashed with the black worn by all of his bandmates.
Reznor later removed his white shirt mid-set in favor of a black tank
top, which gave fans a look at his sculpted arms, the same arms that abused
his mic and mic stand, guitar, keyboard, and whatever else was in the way,
as the passionate Reznor displayed his fully talented musicianship.
As a stage-level spotlight shone upon Reznor, an ominous 30-foot shadow
often flashed along the Congress Theater back wall, as he led his band through
a stellar 90-minute set that featured fan favorites “March of the Pigs,” “Piggy,”
“Reptile,” “Ruiner,” “Wish” and many others.
The appreciative Reznor wasn’t done, though. Before he and his band demolished
the drum kit and guitars upon stage exit, Nine Inch Nails tore through smash
hits “Closer” and “Terrible Lie,” while sandwiching the new track “The Hand
that Feeds” between a passionate rendition of “Hurt” and the set-ender “Head
Like a Hole.”
If the pair of sold-out Chicago shows were any indication of the bonded
loyalty Nine Inch Nails fans have for their favorite band, the already mammoth
Nine Inch Nails army will no doubt increase exponentially.
The current Nine Inch Nails tour runs through May 31 when the band plays
at Soma in San Diego. For more information on Nine Inch Nails log on to www.nin.com.
