Ozma to Play Chicago’s Beat Kitchen

By Randy J. Klodz

Southern California quintet Ozma is prepared to infect Chicago with its catchy blend of power pop when the band rolls through Chicago’s Beat Kitchen on July 7.

Ozma—which now includes Daniel Brummel (lead vocals, bass), Ryen Slegr (lead vocals, guitar), Jose Galvez (guitar), Kenn Shane (drums) and Star Wick (keyboards, flute)—is on tour in support of the band’s latest release “Pasadena,” which hit stores nationwide in May.

As veterans of the touring scene as a headliner and as support for such alternative-rock heavyweights as Weezer, Ozma has honed the craft of performing live in front of crowds both large and small. The band is now ready to headline in support of its latest effort.

On “Pasadena,” an album fit for a long summer drive, the giddy opener “No One Needs to Know” shines while supporting tracks like “Eponine,” “Fight the Darkness,” “Incarnation Blues” and “Underneath My Tree” hit home.

Star Wick’s angelic vocals lend well to the low-key “Heartache vs. Heartbreak” and the acoustic “I Wonder” sparkles, while the album’s ender “Straight Flush” puts the album to a close with a slam.

Beat Kitchen is at 2100 W. Belmont Ave. Tickets for this all-ages show are listed for $10 each in advance and $12 day of show each with showtime slated for 6:30 p.m. Bands Eastern Conference Finals and The Actual are also on the bill. For more on Ozma log on to www.ozmaonline.com.
