Umphrey’s McGee to Invade Chicago Theatre

By Randy J. Klodz

If you’ve heard the name Umphrey’s McGee within the last few years, but haven’t put two and two together, the Chicagoland-based sextet has amassed a steady following nationwide with its grooving rhythms and downright fun concert performances. Umphrey’s McGee plans to thrill the masses March 10 at Chicago Theatre.

Umphrey’s McGee—which includes Brendan Bayliss (guitar, vocals), Jake Cinninger (guitar, Moog, synthesizer, vocals), Ryan Stasik (bass), Kris Myers (drums, vocals), Andy Farag (percussion) and Joel Cummins (keyboards, vocals)—is on tour in support of its upcoming album “Safety in Numbers” which is set to hit stores on April 4.

While Umphrey’s McGee is popular in the Chicago metropolitan area, the band is also vastly popular nationwide. When the band isn’t performing its own headlining performances, the band will hop on tour with a popular act like Dave Matthews Band, of which Umphrey’s McGee will perform as support on two local Dave Matthews Band concerts at Alpine Valley Music Theatre in East Troy, Wis. on July 1 and July 2.

Fans familiar with Umphrey’s McGee enjoy the band’s penchant for impromptu jamming interludes and the band’s fan, party-friendly style of performance. “Safety in Numbers” further adds a layer to the Umphrey’s McGee maturation process with several songs topping five, six, and seven minutes each.

“Safety in Numbers” songs like “Intentions Clear,” “Nemo,” “The Weight Around,” “Women Wine and Song.” When one listings close, the harmonica of Huey Lewis can be detected on “Women Wine and Song,” while the jazzy saxophone of Joshua Redman brings “Intentions Clear” to a whole new level. Fans will also enjoy the laid-back instrumental track “End of the Road.”

Chicago Theatre is at 175 N. State St. Tickets for this all-ages show are listed in a range from $27.50 thru $32.50 each with showtime slated for 7:30 p.m. For more info on Umphrey’s McGee log on to
