Via Tania To Travel Coast to Coast, But Will Have
Room For Chicago
By Randy J. Klodz
A new Australian songbird will be in Chicago to support her March-released
debut LP “Under a Different Sky,” when she makes her appearance as Via Tania
(aka Tania May-Bowers) as part of EstroJam which will take place at Park West
on Aug. 8.
While currently living in Chicago for the summer, Bowers will embark
on her first tour of the States that will take her from coast-to-coast in
the span of two weeks. She will make a special late-night Chicago appearance
that has her in New York on Thursday, Chicago on Friday and New York again
on Saturday. Bowers said that she preferred to work around the Chicago date,
but that it fell right in the middle of her tour plans. Though the trek may
be tiring, Bowers didn’t seem too concerned. “Hopefully I won’t be too much
of a zombie,” she said, “because in New York I’m going to want to hang out
for ages. And we usually don’t get much sleep.”
For this show Bowers will be performing her selections solo with her
guitar and will often make use of her laptop to create some other forms of
ambience. Her music can be best described as something that could be heard
during a mellow musical performance at any given coffee shop.
Sort of the whole Norah Jones meets Poe meets Fiona Apple vibe can be
found on such selections as “In the Distance” and “Moonlight and Chaos.” Bower’s
style of music, as she described is “pretty subtle and very loosely pop music,”
a style that’s supported by the song “The Rising.” As the song title suggests,
this song raises the tempo to a typical pop song level with her soft voice
often echoing behind scratchy guitar work and twangy bass.
EstroJam is a series of events that take place from city to city, usually
showcasing local female musical talent. This event is scheduled to remain
in Chicago from Aug. 7 until Aug. 10 with plenty of music and activities planned
throughout the city.
Park West is at 322 W. Armitage Ave. Tickets for this 18+ event can only
be purchased in advance via outlets such as www.musictoday.com.
Bowers will be appearing directly before the headlining Cat Power is to take
the stage. For more information on Via Tania, log on to www.chocolateindustries.net/viatania.
